Hippy is a broad and nearly meaningless word. Like “Beatnik,” it is a newspaper term, the creations of headline writers who make their living by translating reality into quick, eye-catching phrases that will fit in one or two columns. Today’s Hippies are yesterday’s Beatniks and yesteryear’s Bohemians. By any name, they have never liked steady jobs or barbers, and their rude rebellion to Establishment life-style has always been a bone in the throat to those who revere discipline, authority, and moderation in all things. This has been especially true in America, which has a weird tradition of honoring its dead rebels and jailing its live ones.
